A new hotel is set to create over 100 new full and part time jobs in Chester city centre.

Chester West & Chester Council’s planning committee, with consultation by Historic England, have given the go ahead for the new 162-room development on the cathedral city’s Frodsham Street.

The ‘lifestyle’ hotel, which has been designed to fit in with the local architecture of the historic city centre, will overlook Chester Cathedral.

Developers and investors of the project forecast that around 130 new hotel jobs will be created by the new property.

The development consists of 700 square metres of retail space on the ground floor, four floors of hotel accommodation and a rooftop restaurant.

Giving some details of the ethos behind the new hotel, Tony Barton, the chairman of Donald Insall Associates (architectural designer of the hotel) said:

“Our approach has been to reflect and echo the context of Chester’s unique streetscape in a contemporary form using traditional materials to add a sense of place to an important city centre site that requires regeneration.”

“We carefully designed a relatively large hotel in a sensitive historic setting which will give a significant economic boost to Chester,” added the chairman.

Manchester-based AXIS-RE has been development manager for the project. Nick Mullins, the company’s director, also commented, saying:

“It is hugely exciting to see these plans approved, particularly because we have worked so closely with the council and Historic England to create a hotel that complements and enhances the local area.”

“Bringing new jobs and amenities, it will be a real asset for the people of Chester, as well as providing much needed hotel beds for visitors seeking a boutique, lifestyle experience,” said Mr Mullins.
