Pub chain Heineken has announced expansion plans which bosses say will create over 1,000 new full and part time pub jobs in the UK.

The Dutch brewery firm, owned in the UK by Star Pubs, is hoping to buck the trend of pub closures by reopening over 60 closed venues and funding investment to improve more than 600 Heineken bars and eateries.

Part of the strategy by Heineken is to significantly improve pubs in suburban areas for locals who are now working from home more often than commuting into city centre offices.

The company forecasts that around 1,075 vacancies will be created in the catering and hospitality sector by its £40 million investment plans for 2024.

Edinburgh-based Star Pubs currently have almost 2,500 pubs across the UK, so the improvements and reopening will cover around a quarter of their portfolio.

Announcing the expansion plans, the Managing Director of Star Pubs, Lawson Mountstevens, stressed the importance of good pubs to local communities and called on the UK government to support the cause by cutting taxes for licensees.

“People are looking for maximum value from visits to their local. They want great surroundings and food and drink as well as activities that give them an extra reason to go out, such as sports screenings and entertainment.”

“Creating fantastic locals that can accommodate a range of occasions meets this need and helps pubs fulfil their role as vital spaces where communities can come together. Pubs have proved their enduring appeal, and, after all the disruption of recent years, Star is on track to have the lowest number of closed pubs since 2019.”

“It’s a tribute to the drive and entrepreneurship of licensees and the importance of continued investment. We’ve spent more than £200m upgrading and maintaining our pubs over the last five years and we’ll continue to invest to keep them open and thriving,” said the MD.
