Online retailer Amazon is hiring hundreds of new staff in Peterborough ahead of the busy period of Christmas trading.

Some of the roles will be seasonal jobs just for the Xmas holidays, but other vacancies will be permanent positions.

Both full time and part time positions will be up for grabs at the company’s three fulfilment centres in Peterborough.

Amazon already provides jobs for almost 2,000 members of staff in Peterborough but needs to hire more ‘seasonal associates’ to help them expedite an increase in orders during the Christmas and New Year holidays

As an added incentive to apply for one of the new jobs, Amazon is offering all new recruits a one-off bonus of up to £500, to be paid in two instalments, half in October and half in December.

The news of the jobs bonanza in Peterborough follows just a couple of days after Amazon announced it was creating 1,800 new warehouse jobs in Wakefield, Yorkshire.

Commenting on the new hiring spree in the Cambridgeshire city, a spokesperson for Amazon UK said: “We are recruiting for hundreds of roles at the Peterborough fulfilment centre and we’ll be looking to fill a variety of positions across the centre’s operation.”

“We appreciate the great work our teams do throughout the year, and are proud to offer competitive pay that starts at a minimum of between £10.50 and £11.45 per hour, depending on location, as well as comprehensive benefits that are worth thousands more, including private medical insurance, life assurance, subsidised meals and an employee discount, to name just a few,” added the spokesperson.

The site leader for Peterborough’s main Amazon fulfilment centre, Gareth Davies, added that: “On top of this, we’re pleased to have announced that every full-time, part-time and seasonal associate will receive an additional one-time special payment of up to £500 as an extra thank you.”
