Amazon has announced plans to create 1,800 new warehouse jobs at a new logistics hub in Yorkshire.
The online retailer is set to open a huge fulfilment centre in Stanley near to Yorkshire’s Wakefield, creating hundreds of jobs for the region.
The new vacancies in Yorkshire will consist of around 500 temp jobs and a further 1,300 permanent roles, but an opening date for the Stanley facility is yet to be announced.
Commenting on the recruitment plans, Alison Humphries, the employment and partnership manager at Jobcentre Plus in nearby Pontefract, said:
“Wakefield Jobcentre Plus was approached by Amazon to support them in filling 1,800 jobs for their new site in Stanley. 1,500 permanent roles and 300 temporary roles were available, of which 300 of these vacancies needed to be filled by the end of October.”
Welcoming the news, Councillor Denise Jeffery, the leader of Wakefield Council, said: “We are pleased to see Amazon invest in our district and bring with it a large number of employment opportunities. Amazon is just the latest household name to establish a base in the district.”
“They join Burberry, Haribo and Coca-Cola Enterprises, who along with our homegrown small and medium sized businesses will help strengthen our local economy,” added Councillor Jeffery.
The announcement follows news from earlier this month that Amazon has created around 700 new jobs at a similar fulfilment centre at the Merseyside area of Knowsley in the North West of England.
Commenting at the time, Tony Carr, Amazon Knowsley’s General Manager said: “We are excited to have opened a new fulfilment centre in Knowsley, the first in Merseyside, creating 700 roles across a wide range of disciplines and offering competitive wages, excellent benefits and a modern, safe and engaging work environment from day one.”
“The new fulfilment centre is a further sign of our commitment to the communities in which we operate and I am looking forward to the weeks and months ahead as we grow our team and deliver for our customers,” added Mr Carr.
