You’re under starters’ orders...and you’re off!

Recruitment is now underway for a multitude of amazing events jobs as the UK horse racing calendar gears up for some of its biggest meets of the year.

Galloping up on the rails in the next few weeks, we have the Cheltenham Gold Cup next month, the Grand National at Aintree in April, the Guineas Festival at Newmarket in May, the Epsom Derby in June - and a range of other famous horse races at courses including Sandown Park and Kempton Park.

You too could be earning Guineas galore as race day hospitality staff at any of these venues, with highly flexible hours and shifts on offer.

And, it’s not just on big race days themselves where you can be adding earnings to your saddle bag. Most of the racecourses, big or small, host a variety of conferences and exhibition work even when the horses aren’t running.

For a quick glimpse of what life working at a UK horse track might be like, here’s the job description for some of the positions currently on offer at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool:

“Here at Aintree, home of the Randox Health Grand National, we are looking for committed, talented and driven people to join our culinary team providing over 12,000 covers at the 2019 Grand National Festival and beyond. Roles vary from Kitchen Assistants, Commis Chefs, CDP through to Sous Chef and Lead Chef.”

“You will be expected to work in a fast paced, hustling kitchen environment at one of our many hospitality or retail outlets on site at Aintree, performing to one of our differing service styles from A la Carte, Carvery, Buffet or banqueting.”

“Supporting our North West Region beyond the festival covering all bases at Aintree, Haydock Park and Carlisle across a number of different occasions that can range from a race day, wedding or banquet. Each day will provide you with a different challenge requiring a fresh approach.”

As you can see from that final paragraph, if you sign up for jobs with leading names like Levy UK, then you aren’t limited to work at just the big racing event weekends. Although the racecourses do indeed recruit heavily in the run up to major events such as the Grand National, they can also supply you with a regular source of income throughout the year with a full complement of other events which they host on most days (and evenings) of the calendar year.

And, if there’s no work available one weekend at Aintree, then they might channel you off to other nearby racecourses like Haydock Park or Carlisle Racecourse to cover staff shortages for big events there.

The same applies for other horse tracks all over the country. If you sign up for work at one course, you are pretty much guaranteed to be offered more hours at other regional racecourses in the area, too.

A word to the wise, though. These horse racing event jobs get snapped up pretty quick so don’t hang around in the paddock all day. Make sure you are an odds-on front runner by getting a head start on the rest of the field. Make hay while the going is good by applying for the vacancies in your area before the also-rans get wind of them!
