Marks & Spencer Creating 180 New Retail Jobs In Manchester

Marks & Spencer is creating around 180 new full and part time retail jobs in Manchester with the launch of a new store in the North West city’s Trafford Centre.

The new M&S outlet will be located within the former Debenhams store at the shopping centre and bosses say that the Trafford Centre store could be ready for action towards the end of November, just in time for the busy Christmas rush.

Alongside the creation of around 180 job opportunities, the revamped M&S Trafford Centre store aims to showcase the brand’s substantial commitment to bolstering Manchester's local economy.

M&S say that a mix of full and part time positions will be available and are encouraging young people to apply for the wide range of roles on offer.

This move aligns with M&S's recent pledge to inject approximately £500 million into their wider store transformation initiative, which is set to generate over 3,400 additional job positions across the UK.

The M&S Trafford Centre store is set to serve as just one of the pioneering locations among the twenty new outlets scheduled to open across the UK this year.

In a statement announcing the new venture the retailer said: “The brand-new M&S store in the renowned Trafford Centre is expected to open later this winter and the local team is already gearing up for opening day with a major local recruitment drive.”

“[We are] looking to find applicants for the 180 new roles that have been created to support the 135,000 sq ft store, which will offer local shoppers the very best of M&S across Foodhall, Clothing, Home & Beauty departments.”

“Applications are going live on the M&S Jobs website and [we are] also working with local employability schemes such as the Marks and Start programme, run in partnership with The Prince’s Trust to help young people aged 16-30 find employment, to recruit for positions across the store - from customer assistants and bakers to visual merchandisers and operations roles.”

Launching the recruitment drive in Manchester, Laura Smith, manager of the Trafford Centre store, said: “Our local community is at the heart of M&S, so to be able to create more than 180 new job opportunities in Manchester is truly fantastic.”

“We are working closely with local job centres and employability schemes to find and train the best applicants from the local area for the wide variety of roles that are available, including bakers, visual merchandisers and customer assistants,” added Ms Smith.

The news follows reports last week that the company is creating 80 jobs at a new M&S Foodhall in East Sussex. The new outlet will open at Uckfield’s Ashdown Business Park, also before the end of the year, creating dozens of customer assistant, baking and operations opportunities.

Speaking last week, Gavin Boddy, Store Manager at the upcoming East Sussex store, said: “We have worked hard to find and train the best applicants from the local area for the wide variety of roles that were available, including bakers and customer assistants.”

“We have identified some great candidates and we can’t wait for the local community to meet them when we open the doors later this year,” said Mr Boddy.
