Fortescue, an Australian iron ore firm, is creating over 120 graduate vacancies, apprenticeships and other skilled jobs in Oxfordshire.

The company is set to open a new state-of-the-art battery facility in Banbury which will see Fortescue recruiting dozens of engineers and technicians.

The announcement is in addition to the 300 jobs which Fortescue has already pledged to create by the end of the year in nearby Kidlington.

The Kidlington plant should be ready before the end of 2023, whilst the Banbury facility is due to open during 2024.

Making an announcement about the new jobs in Banbury, Andrew Forrest, the founder of Fortescue, said: “With Fortescue’s investment, British engineering will be at the cutting edge of the green energy economy with WAE’s battery systems providing world leading technology to the entire global industrial sector.”

“It is heartening to have the UK’s trade secretary today at our factory in Oxfordshire to support this message of British technology excellence for both its people and its highly attractive working environment.”

Kemi Badenoch, the UK business and trade secretary mentioned by Mr Forrest, also commented, saying: “Fortescue’s investment in Oxford shows how this government is creating the right conditions to encourage cutting-edge advanced manufacturing companies to invest in the UK.”

“This new state-of-the-art site will bolster the UK's electric vehicle supply chain and create over 120 highly skilled jobs, helping to grow our economy,” added Ms Badenoch.
