Steven Knight, the creator of hit TV series Peaky Blinders, has announced plans to launch new studios in Birmingham, a move which will create over 750 jobs in the city.

The new Digbeth Loc. Studios will provide facilities to produce films and TV series in disused Victorian warehouses of Birmingham and the development is expected to provide jobs for around 760 people in the long term.

Mr Knight expects construction to be complete at the new studios by July this year, with the facilities ready to start filming new dramas as early as October 2023.

MasterChef is one production which will be making use of the new studios. Also a documentary about the ska and two-tone music movements, for which Birmingham was an important inflection point, is due to be filmed at the location.

The venue will consist of three filming studios and support facilities over a space of around 7,500 square metres.

Announcing the new plans and the jobs it will create, the creator of Peaky Blinders said: “It's so exciting that this day has come and after a lot of hard work by lots of people at Homes England, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority. Our plans are ambitious and we will be making TV and movies on an international scale.”

“We are planting an industry in the fertile soil of Birmingham and we need local people to make it happen. We have structures in place to begin the business of training local people in the skills needed and we want people to know that this is a viable industry that is here to stay.”

“We're setting up in the heart of, what was once, Peaky Blinders country and it's very fitting that we are bringing it all back home,” added Mr Knight.
