Meat processing firm Danish Crown is opening a new £100 million factory which the company says will create 300 new full and part time vacancies in Greater Manchester.
The company, which specialises in pork products but also processes beef and other meat, will open the new facility at Kingsway Business Park in the town of Rochdale, less than 10 miles from Manchester.
The factory, which will span over 320,000 square feet, will be used to process around 900,000 kilograms of bacon and gammon every week. The facility should be ready for action towards the end of next summer with hundreds of vacancies up for grabs.
Announcing the new vacancies, Danish Crown UK’s chief executive officer, Lars Albertsen, said: “We are delighted to be investing in Rochdale and the Greater Manchester region. In these difficult economic times, it is just brilliant that Danish Crown is able to bring 300 new jobs to the area, as well as paving the way for a more sustainable food supply chain in the UK.”
“We have a long history in Manchester, currently employing 80 people across Whitefield and Halifax and we look forward to expanding the Danish Crown family by investing further in the local community.”
“This investment forms the next step in our commitment to the UK market, bringing our customers a reliable, transparent supply of high-quality bacon to help meet demand, produced to high sustainability and welfare standards,” added the CEO.
Councillor John Blundell, a Rochdale Development Agency (RDA) board member, also commented, saying: “This is welcome news for the people of the borough with many seeking an opportunity for a new career. Unemployment is an issue we are working hard to reduce and this new factory will offer residents the chance to make that leap back into the workforce.”
“But also, as there will be a wide variety of positions made available, there will be the chance to change direction. It is a good day for the borough to hear this announcement.Highly automated production equipment will be used along with the latest processing technology to cure, smoke, slice and pack bacon and gammon. This will see individuals become highly skilled in the work they do,” added Cllr Blundell.
