Maelor Foods Set To Create 125 Full Or Part Time Jobs In Wrexham

Maelor Foods, a chicken processing firm, could create up to 125 new full and part time jobs in Wrexham if the council allows them to expand their operations in the North Wales city.

The company is currently allowed to process up to one million chickens each week but hopes that Wrexham Council will grant permission for them to double production at their factory to two million birds per week.

The expansion of operations at its facility on Pickhill Lane in the Cross Lanes area of Wrexham would lead to a major recruitment drive that would see Maelor Foods increase their headcount by around 50 per cent, from a current level of 250 employees to 375 members of staff.

The company tends to recruit locally, with almost 9 in 10 employees being from Wrexham and other parts of North Wales.

Announcing the proposal, Maelor Foods’ company director Ricky Mehta, said: “Since beginning operations at Pickhill Lane in 2014, we have gone from processing 400,000 to one million birds per week since April 2022. Across the UK, similar facilities are not limited on the number of birds they process. As a result, we have now submitted a variation of conditions application to Wrexham Council, asking to raise the restriction to two million birds a week.”

“Our existing facility could process a further one million birds without the need for any physical expansion. This growth would create 125 new, well-paid jobs for local people in Wrexham, whilst boosting our contribution to the Wrexham economy by £20m, every year.

“At a time when the price of food and goods is at the front of everyone’s mind, we hope that Wrexham Council recognises the economic and social benefit our proposals can bring and maximise the potential of existing facilities like ours at Pickhill Lane to help meet demand for well-priced, home reared poultry,” added Mr Mehta.
