Online food order and delivery firm Just Eat has said it can create over 1,000 new UK jobs before March 2021.

The company is changing the way that some of its couriers are employed, in a move which will also see Just Eat’s existing 1,500 staff change to different working conditions if they so wish.

In a move away from the so-called ‘gig economy’ the delivery firm is adopting a new agency worker option and says it will be the first major food delivery aggregator to offer pay on an hourly basis.

Currently, Just Eat couriers are paid on a per-job basis but the company now wants to offer its delivery drivers the chance to earn the national minimum or living wage per hour, in addition to other benefits such as holiday, sick and maternity or paternity pay as well as pension contributions.

As part of the new scheme, the company will also provide couriers with Just Eat-branded clothing and e-bikes or e-mopeds.

Couriers in central London will be the first to have the chance to benefit from the evolution of working conditions, followed by Birmingham at the start of 2021, before Just Eat rolls the model out to most other parts of the UK.

Just Eat says that hundreds of extra full time, part time and zero hour contracts could be created in the next three or four months once the initiative gets underway

There will still be the option for couriers to opt out of the new model and work as independent contractors instead, but Just Eat hopes that the changes will offer workers more job security in these uncertain times.

Announcing the plans, UK Managing Director for Just Eat UK, Andrew Kenny, said: “As the market leader in online food delivery, we believe it is our responsibility to offer couriers a wide range of working options and benefits.”

“From our experience in other European markets, we know many couriers value the benefits and protections our new model offers and, with the use of electric vehicles, this will also help us build a sustainable future for food delivery in the UK.”
