After a successful test launch in the UK, BP’s online ‘Skills Refinery’ employability scheme for university students has gone global.

Along with the United States, Australia, Azerbaijan and Singapore, the UK was picked out last year as a test ground for the oil and gas giant’s pilot programme which aims to make first and second year university students more employable.

After trialling in the five territories last year and being deemed a success, BP has now cast the net further so that students worldwide can access the programme.

The Skills Refinery features an online portal and community to improve students learning and skills across five key areas:

- Critical problem-solving
- Innovation
- Influence & communication
- Cognitive flexibility
- Emotional intelligence

Students use interactive quizzes to develop their skills across the five modules and see how they can improve their employability by enhancing them.

Students work together in multiple national teams to work on challenges and submit video solutions. Winners at the national level win them go on to compete against teams of students in other countries to find the eventual international champion.

The winning team will win an all-expenses paid trip to the One Young World 2020 Summit in Germany next year.

Announcing the expansion of the Skills Refinery programme this year, BP’s group head of talent acquisition, Julia Harvie-Liddel, said: “In the rapidly evolving world, students need to ‘future-proof’ their skills. The disruption of digitalisation and technology is revolutionising the workplace. We want to help students to be as ready as they can be to take on new challenges.”

“While we may not know what the jobs of the future will be, the Skills Refinery has been developed to give students the underlying skills base to be prepared for them,” added Ms Harvie-Liddel.

Relaunched for 2019-20 last week, you can access the latest incarnation of the BP Skills Refinery programme here. It’s completely free to register and use the platform providing that you are first or second year university student who is at least 18 years old.
