Lloyds Banking Group To Create 500 New Jobs In Edinburgh

Lloyds Banking Group is to open a new technology centre which the finance firm says will create around 500 new jobs in Edinburgh.

The owner of Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds Bank and Scottish Widows said it was developing the ‘tech hub’ due to ‘a shift in customer behaviour towards digital services’, alluding to the fact that more and more users of financial services are self-accessing products via online banking and smartphone apps.

The 500 new Lloyds jobs in Edinburgh will be introduced before the end of 2020 and will consist of graduate positions and highly skilled roles such as data scientists and software engineers.

Explaining the need for a new tech hub in Edinburgh, Lloyds Banking Group's Scottish executive committee chairman, Philip Grant, said: “We’re working with the industry to strengthen our tech-based talent pool in Scotland, which will not only benefit customers of Lloyds Banking Group, but support the development of technology, skills and talent in the fastest growing digital economy outside London.”

“People’s expectations are rising rapidly as they want the same experience they’re used to with established digital brands. In our tech labs, we are designing what customers will need in the future, making products and services that can adapt to their lives and making it easier for them to connect with their finances,” added Mr Grant.

Welcoming the news from , Derek Mackay, the Scottish Economy Secretary, said: “Edinburgh is fast becoming one of the UK's most competitive tech hubs, with growth in agile start-ups, offerings from its world-leading universities and new digital academies providing greater scale and choice for careers in the industry.”

“The investment by Lloyds Banking Group will be a major boost towards growing the workforce of the future in Scotland, helping create a more dynamic and innovative side to its thriving financial sector,” added Mr Mackay.
