Jobs Up - Regional Divide Stubborn

Adzuna, a search engine for jobs, cars and properties, has produced figures showing that over 760,000 new full and part time UK jobs were advertised in November. That is a sharp rise of more than 13 per cent on November 2012 and a jump of 2.6 per cent on the previous month.

Unfortunately for students and graduates in the north of the UK, there is still a stubborn divide, with more opportunities being created in the south of the nation. 8 of the top ten most difficult places to find a job in November were in the north, compared with 9 of the top ten easiest towns and cities to secure work being located in the south. The only city in the north which made the top ten list was Aberdeen in Scotland, which actually fared better than any other place in the UK.

The university city of Cambridge was the best English to seek work last month, with only 0.31 jobseekers chasing each vacancy advertised in the area. Compare that with Salford in the North West of England, where more than 60 people were eligible for every vacancy in the city. Those figures suggest that it was over 209 times more difficult to land a job in Salford than it was to find a full or part time job in Cambridge.

The ten best places to find jobs in the UK during November (in order) were: Aberdeen, Cambridge, Guildford, Reading, Oxford, Winchester, Exeter, London, Milton Keynes and Slough.

The most difficult places to search for vacancies were Salford, Rochdale, Hull, Sunderland, the Wirral, Wolverhampton, Southend on Sea, Middlesbrough, Bradford and Plymouth.

The statistics for graduate jobs also made for grim reading, with salaries and the number of vacancies down around 15 per cent since the start of the year. The good news for graduates and students still at university, though, is that the picture looks set to improve over the next twelve months as 1 in 3 companies recently surveyed by the CBI expect to offer more graduate vacancies next year.

Commenting on the latest jobs figures, Andrew Hunter, one of the founders of Adzuna, said: “The UK jobs market is quickly becoming a tale of two halves, with significantly more vacancies arising in the South of the country. Cities such as Aberdeen and Cambridge are breaking away from the rest of the UK, with widespread job creation as a result of the thriving energy and technology industries in those areas. Meanwhile, some other parts of the UK are being left behind.”

Mr Hunter was quick to point to the overall positive picture in the UK jobs market, adding: “The resulting jobs revival is still filtering through now. Vacancies are growing, competition for jobs is easing, and unemployment is falling across the country.”
