80,000 Full & Part Time Hotel Jobs Could Be Created By VAT Cut

80,000 Full & Part Time Hotel Jobs Could Be Created By VAT Cut As many as 80,000 full and part time hotel jobs for young people could be created if the government cuts the rate of VAT says Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments.

Mr Varney says that the UK has fallen from 5th to 11th as an international tourist destination and blames VAT cuts in other nations as a cause for our lack of competitiveness.

Merlin Entertainments is the company behind Legoland, London Eye, Alton Towers Resort, Madame Tussauds, SeaLife, Thorpe Park and other leisure and tourism attractions.

“If we cut VAT to 5 percent on hotel rooms and visitor attractions, we could create 80,000 jobs, predominantly among 16-24 year olds of which one in five is currently out of work,” said Mr Varney.

Mr Varney suggests that a VAT cut on hotel rooms from the current 20% down to 5% would pay for itself within just a few years by boosting the UK economy. The Merlin Entertainment’s chief executive, however, revealed that he had spoken to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and tourism minister John Penrose and had been told that an instant VAT rate cut was not possible at the moment.
