Is Social Media Useful In The Search For A Graduate Job?

23 Jan 2011

Is Social Media Useful In The Search For A Graduate Job? There seems to have been some conflicting evidence over the last 12 months or so as to whether or not social media is a useful medium when looking for student jobs and graduate vacancies.

The received opinion has pretty much always been that social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Linked In are great ways for graduates and other student job hunters to get their profile out there and network with recruitment decision makers.

It would seem to make sense that if you are looking for a graduate job, and most of the big graduate employers are using social media as part of their recruitment campaigns, then you would be crazy not to try to connect with them through those channels.

But is the received wisdom correct?

The most recent survey we have seen was reported in The Recruiter this week and suggests that students overwhelmingly don’t find social media to be a useful way to look for student jobs.

According to the survey in The Recruiter, 8 out of 10 students don’t think social media is a useful tool in the search for a job. Online jobsites and job boards, however, came out well from the survey with over 3 in 5 students saying they were the most effective means of looking for a job.

We wondered what E4S readers, jobseekers and employers thought about this issue, so we have created a poll on our Facebook fanpage to see what you believe is the most useful way to go about looking for a job in 2011.

Are traditional methods such as newspaper adverts, jobcentres and university or college careers services still the way forward? Or have student jobsites like E4S overtaken those methods as the most efficient way to find graduate vacancies and student jobs?

Is there even a place for graduate job recruitment on sites like Twitter and Facebook – or should those channels simply not be used for such things?

Please let us know what you think is the best way to look for student jobs and graduate positions by casting a very quick vote in our Facebook poll now!
