A new government document is offering advice to the parents of graduate job seekers on how to steer their offspring through the post-graduation experience. It says that parents should avoid nagging at all costs (a definite DON’T) – whilst at the same time they should make your home life less than comfortable and dish out ‘tough love’ (both definite DOs).
The Daily Mail was typically outraged by the advice. Of this latest government publication from the newspaper’s self-styled ‘nanny state’ they fumed that: “By the time their offspring hit their 20s, most parents would probably assume they have got the hang of child-rearing.”
The new guide (Parent Motivators: A parent’s guide to helping graduates find work) published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, advises parents against making your life at home too cosy - otherwise why would you even want to get a graduate job? It helpfully reminds your parents that if they are, “providing free board and lodgings, a well-stocked fridge, washing and ironing done, plus an allowance, there’s not much drive there. So cut back to help increase their motivation.”
Get to the fridge quickly anyone who is looking for a graduate job!!
Parents should help you to relax after graduating but must be careful not to let the weeks drift into months. A further piece of careers advice seeks to fan down the flames of the creative graduate by warning that many young people throw away years by dreaming of becoming script-writers or actors. It does, however, sagely advise mums and dads against dismissing your own ideas - but warns that they should plead with you to be realistic.
Other ‘No-Nos’ highlighted by the guide are that parents should not ring round companies for graduate jobs on your behalf or fund expensive training…. ‘without researching it first.’
If you are looking for someone to hold your hand - or are a responsible, mature adult with your own motivation who simply happens to be looking for a graduate job – then we can help you…without the nagging.
