700,000 Jobs From Investment In Digital Technology

700,000 Jobs From Investment In Digital Technology Those of you interested in graduate IT jobs in London will welcome a recent report by the London School of Economics. The LSE have predicted that a £15 billion investment in digital technology could create and retain up to 700,000 jobs in the UK.

If the money was to be invested in broadband networks, a smart power grid and intelligent transport systems, hundreds of thousands of saved and new jobs would be the result - and this could help the UK economy to recover more than other physical infrastructure spending on such things as new roads. It could also bring about huge cuts in carbon emissions by encouraging new greener technologies such as plug-in hybrid electric cars.

The report, titled ‘The UK's Digital Road to Recovery’, was part funded by IBM – an important recruiter for graduate IT jobs in London and all around the globe. It was produced in partnership between LSE and the Information Technology and Innovation Fund.

The report breaks down the £15 billion figure, saying that a £5 billion spend on broadband networks could create or retain in the region of 280 thousand jobs. A further £5 billion spent on upgrading transport systems to be more intelligent – such as linking up vehicles and roadside sensors using ICT - could create or retain around 188 thousand jobs and also reduce congestion and increase road safety. A final £5 billion invested in the development of a smart power grid could result in a further 235 thousand jobs being retained or created.

An LSE reader in technology management, Jonathan Liebenau, said that the report "shows that in this severe economic climate the right investment in ICT infrastructure would have a significant effect in creating jobs now and in stimulating productivity and innovation for the future."
