British aerospace, defence and nuclear engineering firm Babcock has announced plans to create 1,000 apprenticeships, graduate jobs and other vacancies.

The new recruits will be based in Scotland at the port of Rosyth near Dunfermline and a variety of manufacturing and ship building roles are on offer at the facility.

4 in 10 of the Babcock vacancies will be apprenticeships, with 400 positions on offer. There will also be 350 jobs for production support operatives. The other 250 vacancies will be for graduates, engineers and other tradespeople.

The 1,000 vacancies at Babcock are to be filled over the next four years and the company says it is looking for applicants from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, skill sets and experience levels.

Launching the recruitment drive for hundreds of new staff, Babcock International Group’s Chief Executive Officer, David Lockwood, said: “Attracting and retaining talent is essential to the future success of our business and directly benefits the local communities in which we operate.”

“Continued investment in Babcock’s development programmes and facilities enables our apprentices, graduates and trainees to experience a mix of on-the-job learning in a modern, digitally led industrial environment, alongside academic training with further education partners and our own Babcock Skills Academy.”

“Our apprentices play a really important role in our workforces across the UK, ensuring we can sustain the technical skills needed to continue to deliver critical national defence programmes,” added the CEO.

The Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering, Paul Sheerin, welcomed the news, saying: “Babcock Rosyth’s announcement is fantastic for the engineering industry in Scotland and the wider UK too. With a staggering four hundred of the one thousand newly created roles being apprentices, what a fantastic opportunity to add highly skilled, well-paid jobs to our economy and boost our talent pool significantly.”

James Cartlidge, the UK Minister of State for Defence Procurement, also commented:
