Rolls Royce To Create Over 1,000 New Jobs & Apprenticeships In Derby

Rolls Royce has announced expansion plans which the company says will create over 1,000 new full or part time jobs in Derby.

The submarine sector of Rolls Royce’s operations, which already provides jobs for around 4,000 people, is set to double the size of its facilities in the Raynesway area of Derby in a move that will generate up to 1,170 full time roles and apprenticeships.

Jobs on offer will include manufacturing roles and engineering positions and the recruitment drive will be fuelled by funding from the UK’s Ministry of Defence as part of their 2021 pact with Australia and the United States under the AUKUS agreement between the three countries.

Announcing the new Derby jobs, Steve Carlier, the president of Rolls-Royce Submarines, said: “This is a truly exciting time for our business, with work secured that will see us support UK and Australian submarines well into the second half of this century.”

“It will see thousands of jobs created across the UK supply chain, many of which here in Derby, and we’re proud to be playing our part in this international endeavour.”

“For over 60 years we have provided the power to the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines and our expansion plans are the first step in helping Australia acquire their own nuclear propulsion attack submarine capability, while showcasing British innovation and expertise on the world stage,” added Mr Carlier.

James Cartlidge, the UK Government’s Minister for Defence Procurement, welcomed the news, saying: “This is a crucial investment and a significant next step in ensuring we have the capacity, skills and nuclear expertise to support the UK’s current and future submarine programmes, including the next-generation nuclear-powered submarines for the UK and Australia through our AUKUS partnership.”

“Supporting hundreds of high-skilled jobs in Derby, this investment demonstrates this Government’s unwavering commitment to the defence nuclear enterprise and growing the UK economy,” said Mr Cartlidge.

Local councillors also welcomed the development, with Baggy Shanker, the leader of Derby City Council, saying: “We’re thrilled that Rolls-Royce, one of our city’s biggest employers, will be expanding operations at their Raynesway site and creating over 1,000 new jobs for local people.”

“This investment will bring a huge boost to the city’s economy, reaffirming Derby as a city of innovation and a home to industry leaders. Rolls-Royce is one of the jewels in Derby’s crown and we are delighted to see their continued expansion.”

The MP for Derby North, Amanda Solloway, also commented, saying: “The Rolls-Royce expansion is not only great for their business but also for the people of Derby, offering more jobs and opportunities as well as increased investment in our great city.”

“Rolls-Royce continues to grow from strength to strength and I am excited to see them continue to grow in the years to come.”
