United Utilities Creates Dozens Of New Apprenticeships For Young People

Water company United Utilities is creating dozens of new apprenticeships for young people in the UK.

The utility firm has 62 apprenticeship opportunities on offer this year in spite of the impact of Coronavirus on the jobs market.

United Utilities supplies water to the North West of England and employs over 5,000 people in jobs and apprenticeships across the region.

For the first time, 2020 will see around 1 in 3 of the new apprentices focussing on helping United Utilities to deal with water leaks, one of the company’s biggest headaches.

Other apprenticeships on offer include roles across scientific disciplines, technical positions and customer service functions.

Starting salaries for United Utilities’ apprentices range from £12,500 upwards - and the company also provides a range of other incentives to staff, such as an annual bonus, discounted gym and free driving lessons (if required for your job title).

The prospects after competing an apprenticeship at United Utilities are exceptional, with only around 2 in every 100 apprentices not taking up a permanent role within the company after their training finishes.

Announcing the search for new young talent, Louise Higgins, United Utilities’ Head of Human Resources & Training Delivery, said: “We wanted to relaunch our application window as apprenticeship opportunities have seen a steep fall due to the pandemic. Now more than ever we want to hear from people who traditionally might not have considered a job with their local water company.”

“We offer an award-winning apprenticeship scheme with many interesting roles and we are a company with no barriers when it comes to getting to the very top. Our apprentices are all top-notch, and we would particularly welcome applications from women and those from ethnic and multicultural backgrounds. We aim to meet our aspirations of being a diverse workforce to become more representative of the communities we serve.”

“We always recruit the best person for the job but the communities of the North West are very vibrant and diverse and we want to reflect this within United Utilities,” added Ms Higgins.

Offering a former apprentice’s perspective, Charlotte, who recently completed the Network Asset Engineer apprenticeship at United Utilities, said: “I chose United Utilities to begin my career as it’s a huge corporation that’s widely recognised across the North West and it’s also a secure career path to take. You’re able to prosper in United Utilities and it’s a career for life. Water after all is a vital commodity and I’m proud to be a part of helping our customers.”

“My future goals are to move up the career ladder in United Utilities. I would like to go into Project Management and then one day be a senior leader in the engineering field,” added Charlotte.

You can find out more about all of the apprenticeships on offer on the careers site of United Utilities.

You’ll also find tons of information about almost every available type of apprenticeship available in the UK in our own Apprenticeship section.
