National Apprenticeship Week 2020 - Get Fired Up From 3rd to 9th February 2020

This week (3rd to 9th February) is National Apprenticeship Week 2020! For the first time, this year’s showcase week for apprenticeships in the UK will also run through next weekend rather than finishing on Friday.

The bumper seven-day NAW2020 apprenticeship week has themes of get ‘Fired Up’ and ‘Look Beyond’ - and will feature hundreds of events throughout the week.

National Apprenticeship Week sets out the stall of all the benefits of doing an apprenticeship. Things like learning real skills on the job whilst earning a decent wage and working towards a qualification.

For young people who don’t want to go to university, whether because of a lack of funding or simply because they don’t fancy further education, apprenticeships are a great way into the workplace.

National Apprenticeship Week is designed to highlight how apprenticeships work for potential apprentices, employers, local communities and the wider UK economy.

There will be a mix of business meetings, open days, celebration events and parents evenings urging more people to look beyond some of the negative myths which sometimes affect apprenticeships, and instead, ‘celebrate the diversity and value that apprenticeships bring to employers, apprentices and communities.’

Teeing off what will be the 13th National Apprenticeship Week, Keith Smith, the director of the Apprenticeships Group for the Education & Skills Funding Agency said:

“There is much to celebrate in apprenticeships and National Apprenticeship Week gives the whole apprenticeships community opportunity to showcase the many brilliant apprenticeships available in England today.”

“It is fantastic to see so many events taking place across England I am enthused to be invited to such a variety of events this Week. There’s also lots happening across social media. Let’s all get behind apprenticeships and celebrate the opportunities apprenticeships present to fire up careers!”

Touching on the Look Beyond theme, Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, also commented, saying: “Outdated views are holding young people back from pursuing their dream career. Every parent wants the best for their children and when they ask you for advice about their futures, it’s incredibly daunting. But I know that when I’m asked for help by my children I will absolutely encourage them to consider an apprenticeship.”

“So as we celebrate the life changing potential of apprenticeships I would urge all parents to do the same and look beyond stereotypes and embrace every opportunity,” added Mr Williamson.

You can follow what’s going on with National Apprenticeship Week by keeping an eye on the #NAW2020 hashtag on Twitter and LinkedIn.

For young people who want to know more about apprenticeships, you can also join in a Q&A session this Wednesday 5th on Twitter by following the #AskAnApprentice from noon until 2pm in the afternoon.

There’s also an online event map which you can check to see what’s happening in your own area throughout National Apprenticeship Week 2020.

We also have a wealth of information about apprenticeships on our own website. For the best place to start if you aren’t sure of your options, head over to our UK apprenticeships hub now!
