Company Details

The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) is a fundamental bedrock of the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent programme.

They design, manufacture and support warhead production for the Trident project and many more operations - and have been at the forefront of UK security, in one form or another, since the middle of the twentieth century.

AWE was originally founded in 1950 as the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) at the former RAF Aldermaston airfield in Berkshire by the UK Government’s Ministry of Supply (MoS) department.

Although the sites and facilities are still owned by the UK government’s Ministry of Defence (MOD), the operations of AWE are now under the joint shareholdership of Jacobs Engineering Group, Lockheed Martin Corporation and Serco Group; organisations which can boast a total worldwide headcount of more than a quarter of a million employees.

If you imagine that the AWE are tasked with such sensitive and secretive tasks as maintaining the warheads for the Trident submarine and maintaining the capability to design a new weapon for the UK (should it ever be necessary) then you might understand that we (and even the AWE) can’t give you 100% of the detail surrounding what sort of work you might be asked to carry out as an employee for the company.

But, as AWE themselves say, you certainly won’t be able to find another career anything like it!

There are tons of opportunities to join AWE on any of their functions such as Science, Business Services, Engineering or Industrial. It just depends which area you think your skills would be most suited to.

One of the best routes into work at AWE is via one of their apprenticeship schemes. And there’s certainly no shortage of options to choose from! Here is just a small selection of the apprenticeships available at AWE:

  • Control & Instrumentation Apprenticeship
  • Degree Apprenticeship - Nuclear Engineering
  • Electrical Maintenance Apprenticeship
  • Electronics Apprenticeship
  • Finance Apprenticeship
  • Human Resources Apprenticeship
  • Lab Technician Apprenticeship
  • Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship
  • Supply Chain Management Apprenticeship
  • Technical Author Apprenticeship

If you are already further into your education and at university then AWE could also tempt you with some of their graduate scheme offerings. As with apprenticeships, there is a similar range of programmes for university leavers, including:

  • Environment, Safety and Health Engineering
  • Finance and Business Management
  • IT
  • Nuclear Threat Reduction
  • Physics
  • Production Engineering
  • Programme and Project Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Warhead Engineering

Offering some reasons why YOU should apply for a position at AWE, the company’s recruitment pages say:

“We are always looking for high calibre people to join our team, so why not explore the opportunities we currently have on offer. Whatever stage of your career, AWE is an exciting and excellent environment to develop your skills and achieve your aspirations.”

“You could be part of a unique team supporting the defence and security of the United Kingdom; something AWE has done with pride for more than 60 years. Working with us is exciting and challenging. In fact it’s everything you would expect from a company that supports national security.”

And, of course, you will also receive a competitive salary with regular reviews which should hopefully see your wages rising regularly if you perform well. A structured and supported career progression goes without saying - and you could be entitled to further education funding too at AWE.

Other benefits of working at AWE include a generous annual leave package and a pension contribution from your new employer.
