Best Western hotels have been a feature in the United Kingdom for over 30 years and have built up a portfolio of over 290 properties. As a company, Best Western GB itself only has around 150 direct employees. However, their member hotels provide hundreds of full and part time jobs throughout the country.

The brand was started in a small way by a handful of independent hoteliers who decided to cooperate with each other in order to build up all of their individual businesses. By creating a successful referral network between themselves, the Interchange Hotels link attracted more and more hotels into their fold.

Although they are a part of the bigger American firm Best Western International, the GB version has carved out a very successful path on its own terms, claiming to be the ‘largest group of independently owned and managed hotels in the world.’

Parent company Best Western International in Phoenix, Arizona has over 4,000 hotels and other lodgings and operates in over 80 countries around the world. They have a longer history than Best Western GB, with roots dating back to 1946.

The hotel chain is basically a franchise business model, albeit with a large degree of individuality maintained by each member hotel. They can keep their own name and hotel style, but must make use of Best Western branding and advertise themselves as part of the group. The member hotels pay an annual fee for each of their rooms to Best Western, along with an initial charge to sign up. They do, however, generally maintain ownership of their property themselves.
