Permanent & Temporary Job Vacancies Up In Scotland

New figures from the Bank of Scotland show that the number of permanent and temporary job vacancies have risen in Scotland, with construction, IT and engineering positions driving growth.

The Bank’s survey has been producing figures for more than ten years, but the data for July shows the steepest ever rise in the number of permanent jobs being filled in Scotland.

The rate of demand for staff to fill temporary vacancies rose to its highest level for over two and a half years in Scotland.

The monthly ‘Report On Jobs’ from the Bank of Scotland also provided good news on pay rates too. Salaries for permanent jobs continued a five month run of increases - and the jump in hourly pay for people in temporary jobs set a new record for the Bank’s figures.

Speaking after the new jobs data was revealed, Donald MacRae, the Bank’s chief economist said: “The number of people appointed to permanent jobs rose markedly while the number of vacancies for both permanent and temporary jobs increased strongly. Vacancy growth was marked in the engineering and construction sector. These results suggest rising business confidence is translating into a continuation of the recovery in the Scottish economy this summer.”

Mr MacRae added more good news, saying that the Bank’s overall barometer for the labour market in Scotland was now at a six year high; its highest level since the middle of summer 2007.
