Here’s some great news for anyone looking for summer internships! Anniesland College in Scotland are introducing a new initiative to help their students get work experience over the summer break.
The Glasgow college is introducing an American-style scheme where some of the largest companies in Scotland – including ACCA, Morgan Stanley and TSB – will offer students two summer internships each lasting three weeks. The students will work in various projects for the firms and will benefit from one-to-one mentoring during the placements.
Colleges in England and Wales have been running similar schemes for several years already; Careers Academy UK was founded 7 years ago and has 100 schools and colleges and 600 employers on board. Anniesland College, however, will be a pioneer of this valuable system in Scotland.
Speaking to Scotland’s Evening Times, employment co-ordinator at the college, Lynn McGurk said that, "This will give our students the opportunity to get a real and meaningful experience of a professional work environment. We hope that the internships will have an aspirational effect on our students."
One of the students at Anniesland, Ross Wilson, 16, has secured one of the placements at Morgan Stanley and said that he was really looking forward to it. He thought it would be a fantastic chance to get some real work experience and hoped that it would help him leap frog some of his peers in the job market.
