Anyone interested in graduate finance jobs in London will prick their ears up when they hear that Santander, the Spanish bank, has said that it is bringing 600 new finance jobs to the UK.
Santander is now the owner of Alliance & Leicester, Abbey and substantial elements of Bradford & Bingley. There are also reports that it may soon sign off the purchase of 318 branches of the Royal Bank of Scotland
Santander has become the UK’s third biggest bank and there are rumours that it may list its business here as a separate entity. Pre-tax profits at Santander in the UK were impressive for the first half of 2010, rising 10 per cent to £875 million.
Santander wants to hire more staff to ply its 25 million customers with more saving and investment products. The new finance jobs at Santander branches and call centres are expected to be filled by the end of the year.
Chief Executive of Santander in the UK, António Horta-Osório, said: “We are investing to support the sustainable growth in our business and to continue improving our service. Over the next few months, we will be hiring more than 600 additional staff into our branches and call centres. This investment demonstrates the success of our strategy, our commitment to customer service and our ongoing support for the UK economy.”
Nigel Cotgrove of the Communication Workers Union also welcomed the new finance jobs saying that it was a boost for CWU members and the banking sector in the United Kingdom. Cotgrove said that it was great that Santander was investing jobs for the future at a time when other businesses were cutting back.
