'graduates from top universities earn more'
27-Oct-2008

'Graduates from top universities earn more' University leavers looking for graduate jobs in London earn more on average if they are from top ranking institutions, it has been claimed.

According to the London School of Economics (LSE), students from the top 25 per cent of universities in the UK can expect to earn up to 16 per cent more than those with an equivalent degree from an institution in the bottom quarter, reports the Journal.

Wes Streeting, president of the National Union of Students (NUS), told the news provider: "The NUS believes that if graduates are to contribute to the cost of higher education, they must do so in a way that is progressively linked to actual future earnings."

The LSE claims that those who attend top universities should be prepared to pay more for their education but the Journal reports this could exclude poorer students from high performing institutions.

Meanwhile, Oxford University's chancellor has called on the government to remove the "intolerably low" cap on tuition fees.

Chris Patten said the university would never meet government targets on social inclusion if state schools did not improve their results.
