Young graduates are increasingly choosing careers in marketing and sales because they can get onto big salaries quickly according to the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management (ISMM).

The institute has also said that graduates who are looking to get into the sector should have a good range of abilities in a number of areas to be successful.

Dr William Pedley, director of education at ISMM, said about the attractions of a career in marketing and sales: "If you're good, you will earn a lot of money. We're talking very quickly into six figures. That's the major attraction. But also, it's varied - you have to have to have certain skills and deploy those skills in all kinds of different situations."

He added that the people working in these areas spend more time at their desks than they probably realise but there is "the variety and there is the travel and the different scenarios, so the variety of it is appealing".

According to the ISMM, graduates looking to get into marketing and sales should show that they are an organised person who knows what they are doing. They should also emphasise that they are someone that can be trusted to build a rapport up with people.

Marketers' salaries rose by 6.7 per cent last year making their average income $48,627, according to Marketing Week Magazine.
