Facebook To Create 800 New Engineering Jobs In London

Facebook has announced that their new office in the UK’s capital will create 800 new engineering jobs in London over the next twelve months.

The move will see the social media company increase its UK headcount by more than 50 per cent from current levels of 1,500 to around 2,300 by the end of next year.

Facebook has already had a presence in the UK for a decade but their new seven floor offices near London’s Oxford Circus, set to open at the beginning of next week, will be the firm’s biggest engineering hub outside the United States.

As well as engineering jobs which will be open to graduates, Facebook is also looking for marketing staff, sales teams and developers in London.

Confirming their commitment to the UK, Vice President of Facebook’s European operations, Nicola Mendelsohn, said: “Today’s announcements show that Facebook is more committed than ever to the UK and in supporting the growth of the country’s innovative startups.”

“The UK’s flourishing entrepreneurial ecosystem and international reputation for engineering excellence makes it one of the best places in the world to build a tech company. And we’ve built our company here. This country has been a huge part of Facebook’s story over the past decade, and I look forward to continuing our work,” added Ms Mendelsohn.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, welcomed the announcement, saying: “The emphasis on engineering and the 800 new jobs being created shows London remains at the forefront of global innovation. What’s more, the launch of the company’s incubator is set to play a crucial role in attracting vital talent to London and will help to pave the way for the next generation of successful startups.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, also praised the jobs news from the social media giant, saying: “The UK is not only the best place to start a new business, it’s also the best place to grow one. It’s a sign of confidence in our country that innovative companies like Facebook invest here.”
