Quorn Foods, the meat substitute company, has announced a recruitment drive which will see the firm create 300 Teesside jobs before 2022.

The five year recruitment plan will increase the company’s UK headcount by almost 50 per cent from 650 to 950 members of staff over the next five years.

Over the same timeframe, Quorn will also invest £150 million at their Teesside base in Billingham as they expand the site in order to double output at the facility.

Quorn also has two other UK sites at Stokesley in North Yorkshire and Methwold in Norfolk. Outside of the UK, the food firm also has sites at Frankfurt in Germany and Chicago in the United States and their fungus-based product is now sold in 15 countries worldwide.

The jobs bonanza is being fuelled by strong sales at Quorn Foods, with worldwide turnover up by almost 20 per cent this year as more people turn to a flexitarian diet. Particularly keen on meat-free substitutes for mince, burgers and sausages at the moment is America, where Quorn sales have mushroomed by 40 per cent over the first six months of 2017.

In the first half of this year Quorn says it has made a pre-tax operating profit of more than £13.5 million.

“Our growth will continue as expected, regardless of the Brexit deal that is reached. In fact, today's investment is indicative of our confidence in becoming a billion-dollar brand in the next 10 years,” added Mr Brennan.
