A £200 million redevelopment of the intu Braehead Shopping Centre will generate 5,000 Glasgow jobs now that Renfrewshire Council have given plans the go-ahead.

Renfrewshire Council’s planning and development policy board have voted unanimously to pass the development plans at intu Braehead in a move which will add extra retail space at the shopping centre. The plans also include a new hotel with 200 rooms, a restaurant and an arena which will be able to hold up to 8,000 people for special events.

Hundreds of construction jobs will be created in the development stage and more full and part time jobs will become permanent once the redevelopment of intu Braehead is complete.

Regional centre director for intu Braehead, Peter Beagley, acknowledged how instrumental Renfrewshire Council had been in promoting the plan, saying:

“The decision by the council’s planning board to grant permission in principle is the first step in delivering our proposals, which will create 5,000 new jobs in the retail, leisure and construction industries, with £200 million of private investment in Renfrewshire. Without this planning permission, the vital jobs – along with the investment – could not take place. We will now work with the local authority to bring forward a detailed planning application.”

Local MP Gavin Newlands, was firmly behind the announcement, describing it as an ‘economic boost’ which was ‘great news for Renfrewshire and our local economy.’

“I warmly welcome the decision to give the green light to intu Braehead’s proposals for a significant redevelopment of the shopping centre. The development plans will bring £200 million worth of private investment and 5,000 jobs to our local economy – this is the equivalent of having a second Glasgow Airport in the constituency,” added Mr Newlands.
