Poundworld, the discount retailer, has announced plans for a new distribution centre in Normanton, which will create up to 400 new full or part time jobs in Wakefield.

The new Poundworld facility in West Yorkshire will create at least 300 jobs over the next three years, with the potential for over a hundred more Wakefield vacancies at the distribution centre to be advertised as the chain expands across the UK.

The retailer plans to open over 200 stores before the end of 2018 in a move which will create up to 4,000 more Poundworld jobs in outlets all over the United Kingdom. By the time the expansion is complete, the Wakefield based firm will have close to 500 stores and will employ around 10,000 people in full and part time roles.

Work will get underway shortly on the new Normanton distribution centre and Poundworld expects it to be ready to start servicing its 250+ stores later this year.

Explaining the need for the new facility, chief executive of Poundworld, Chris Edwards, said: “Our new centre will improve efficiency and allow us to offer our customers even more amazing products, increasing the variety in our stores. It is an exciting step forward for us and we look forward to providing further jobs in the Yorkshire region and in other areas across the UK that will be home to new Poundworld stores.”

Local councillor, Denise Jeffery, welcomed the Poundworld announcement saying, “We are delighted they have decided to build a new centre in the district with 300 new jobs, which it needs. I really hope it will start encouraging more businesses to expand across the area, bringing new jobs.”
