Almost 9,000 full and part time Sunderland jobs could be generated now that local councils have secured £87 million of government funding for the area.

Sunderland Council estimates that 8,900 jobs will be created in the region before 2031 by projects which include a new bridge crossing the River Wear and a huge International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) facility close to the existing vehicle plant owned by car maker Nissan.

£5 million will be spent on the IAMP which will cover a space more than 140 times bigger than local football team Stadium of Light. The new manufacturing facility will generate 500 Sunderland jobs each year from 2018, leading to around 5,000 jobs by the time it is completed in 2027.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said the new Sunderland facility would, ‘boost the local supply chain, attract further investment and revitalise local businesses and craftsmen, harnessing local skills.’

The road bridge project over the River Wear will take a further investment of £82 million to complete and will create thousands more jobs in Sunderland over the coming years.

Commenting on the new funding and the projects that it will help facilitate in the region, Sunderland Council Leader, Councillor Paul Watson, said: “The success of this bid underlines the importance of solid infrastructure investments for achieving economic growth. The government has now released the money in a form that allows us to get on and build our bridge. The people of Sunderland are now going to get something that they have wanted for 100 years.”
