Debenhams is to create 6,500 full or part time Christmas jobs at the end of 2011 to cope with the extra number of customers coming into their stores.
Although down on the 9,000 Christmas jobs the retailer announced last year, it is still fantastic to see so many new jobs being created for the festive holidays. Many of the staff that filled Christmas positions last year will be returning to fill the new full and part time positions available this year – but there should still be around 4,000 Christmas jobs on offer for new recruits.
Explaining how full and part time jobs at Christmas can turn into something much more long term, Chief Executive Officer of Debenhams, Michael Sharp, said: “These jobs are sure to be welcomed by local economies during the most financially challenging part of the year. Approximately a quarter of staff that work with us over the festive season will stay on in permanent roles, making this a crucial period in our employment calendar.”
Debenhams has over 150 stores in the United Kingdom and the 6,500 Christmas vacancies will be spread between them. That means it’s quite likely that there will be at least a few Christmas jobs up for grabs at a Debenhams near you this year.
Chris Grayling, the Employment Minister, welcomed the addition of these Christmas jobs at Debenhams: “These roles offer invaluable retail experience for first-jobbers whilst giving those with families the flexible working hours they need. We are committed to injecting new life into the economy and this is a great example of how major players in the private sector are playing a key role in that.”
