Following on from our article last month when Waitrose created 180 new Berkshire jobs, the supermarket chain has now said it will add another 3,000 full or part time UK jobs with further expansion plans in 2011.

Waitrose, owned by the John Lewis Partnership, expects to open 39 more supermarkets and convenience stores after tilling up their best ever Christmas period to date. Sales increased by almost 9 per cent in the calendar month up to Christmas Eve as customers stocked up on upmarket brands and goods for the festive period. The surge in sales has given Waitrose the confidence to announce further floor space expansion and full and part time job plans.

Last year, Waitrose opened just 20 new outlets but will almost double that expansion in the next 12 months. Two-thirds of the new Waitrose outlets for 2011 will be similar to the smaller convenience stores which it introduced successfully last year.

The food and drink retailer now has just over 240 outlets but the latest expansion plans will see the number of its stores swell by over 15 per cent. New outlets are planned for Glasgow, Wimbledon, Exter, Jersey, Guernsey and other locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Full or part time jobs will be developed in a range of positions including meat, fish, wine and cheese specialists along with some managerial jobs.

Commenting on the Waitrose Christmas sales figures and the future new full and part time jobs, Managing Director Mark Price, said: "Our strong Christmas trading figures give us confidence for the year ahead, when we will be continuing to invest in the future growth of our business. In the current climate we’re very pleased to be employing 3,000 new Partners within our business.”
