Graduate unemployment 'at its lowest'

29 Nov 2007

Graduate unemployment 'at its lowest' Graduates are enjoying the lowest rate of unemployment for seven years, according to a new report.

The research, from the What do Graduates Do? report by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU), shows that the number of former students without graduate jobs is at just six per cent, reports onerec.com.

Mike Hill, chief executive of HECSU, told the website: "Overall the report paints a very positive picture of career prospects for UK graduates, with the best chance of employment for many years. We have a record number of graduates successfully pursuing a wide variety of career options, not necessarily related to their degrees, with big gains across many subject areas."

Geography graduates' unemployment rates fell by 2.5 per cent to reach 3.8 per cent – the lowest they have been in 17 years.

People just starting graduate jobs are earning a higher starting salary, the report states. There was an increase in average pay for graduate's first jobs from £17,715 to £18.501.

The number of graduates in architecture, law, psychology, sports science and history has increased over the last year while the number of IT and chemistry graduates has fallen.

Graduates chose the health sector to find employment more than any other industry.

The HECSU is a charity which was established to supply information about research in career-related learning in Higher Education.
