Waitrose Supermarket Chain Creating 560 Warehouse & Driver Jobs In Bristol
Waitrose has confirmed plans to recruit approximately 480 warehouse staff and 80 drivers for its new 360,000 square foot distribution centre in Bristol, which will be operated by logistics firm DHL.
Recruitment by the supermarket chain is expected to begin in spring, ahead of the Avonmouth site becoming operational in early 2027.
The new centre will be Waitrose’s first distribution hub in the South West and is designed to improve deliveries to the retailer’s 50 existing shops across the region, while also supporting future expansion in the area.
The supermarket said the site will play a key role in transforming its supply chain as part of a multi-year £1 billion investment programme across the business.
Waitrose described the Avonmouth facility as its most sustainable warehouse to date. The building will feature 1,200 solar panels, energy-efficient systems and extensive natural light, with the aim of reducing running costs and environmental impact.
Waitrose estimates the site will significantly cut mileage across its supply chain, lowering carbon emissions each year.
The investment also forms part of wider efforts by Waitrose to modernise operations, including increased use of automation and artificial intelligence to improve stock availability and reduce manual processes within its supply chain.
Announcing the plans, Supply Chain Director at Waitrose, Alison Maffin, said: “As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us. This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility.”
“DHL shares our commitment to sustainable logistics, making them the perfect partner for this next phase of our expansion,” added Ms Maffin.
In response, the Chief Executive Officer of DHL Supply Chain UK, Martin Willmor, said: “We are excited to be working with Waitrose as they expand their regional presence while reducing supply chain emissions. The new Bristol site reflects our shared commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, whilst supporting the community.”
The councillor for Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston, Don Alexander, also commented, saying: "Avonmouth continues to flourish economically, not just in terms of the number of jobs, but also with the development of companies. Local councillors welcome the news that Waitrose is expanding its base as this will bring more employment opportunities to local communities.”
Bristol North West MP Darren Jones agreed, saying: “It's wonderful news for my constituency that about 550 new jobs will be created at the company's new distribution hub in Avonmouth."
When vacancies go live, warehouse roles and driving jobs at the Avonmouth distribution centre will be advertised through the DHL careers website.
