If you've ever wondered how Dr. Martens boots go from raw materials to iconic footwear worn around the world, now's your chance to find out - and get paid while you do it!
The legendary British brand Dr. Martens is opening up applications for its hugely popular Footwear Manufacturing Apprenticeship, giving hands-on learners the opportunity to train alongside experts at their Northamptonshire factory.
No experience? No problem! Dr. Martens is looking for passionate, curious individuals who are ready to roll up their sleeves and learn the art of shoemaking; from the first leather cut to the final yellow stitch.
Over the course of the 15-month programme, apprentices will rotate through every major stage of the shoemaking process. You'll start with Clicking, where you’ll operate cutting presses with precision and use innovative leather scanning and digital cutting tools to maximise quality and minimise waste.
In the Closing department, you’ll stitch together uppers using a variety of sewing machines, gaining hands-on experience with traditional techniques.
Next comes Lasting, the stage where each shoe takes shape. You'll learn how to stretch and mould leather over a last (a foot-shaped mould) and then attach the iconic Dr. Martens sole using the famous yellow welt stitch.
Finally, in the Shoe Room, you’ll prepare the finished product for the world: lacing, polishing, inspecting and boxing up each pair, ready for dispatch.
This is a unique opportunity to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques, all while working towards a government-accredited Level 2 qualification in Footwear Manufacturing.
As an apprentice, you’ll get your hands on real work from day one - and you’ll be rewarded for it. You’ll have the chance to design and create your very own custom pair of Dr. Martens boots as a final project and you’ll even receive a free pair of Docs when you join the team.
You’ll also enjoy a generous 65 per cent discount across the brand, private healthcare, two paid volunteer days each year and a lunchtime finish every Friday.
Apprentices are encouraged to get involved in the wider community too, including running the Apprenticeship Instagram account and learning all about the brand’s rich history and culture.
Explaining the role on offer, the job description reads: “As a Dr. Martens apprentice, you’ll work alongside the production team at our Made in England Factory in Northamptonshire and learn the footwear production process from start to finish. Along the way, you will have the chance to learn job-specific skills whilst earning a wage, with time to study and further your development.”
This opportunity is ideal for anyone with a can-do attitude and a desire to learn a hands-on trade. Dr. Martens is looking for applicants who are eager to build practical skills and care about producing quality work. A genuine passion for the brand goes a long way, and you'll need to have GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C (Level 3/4) or above.
How to Apply
Applications are open now and are expected to close at the end of April, so don’t hang around if you want to apply.
If shortlisted, you’ll be invited for an initial chat with Dr. Martens’ Talent Acquisition Team. From there, you’ll be invited to an assessment day at the Northamptonshire factory, taking place on 10th or 12th June. This includes a tour of the site, some practical shoemaking tasks and a short interview to get to know you better.
So, if you're ready to build something iconic and begin your career with a brand that champions individuality and creativity, this is your chance!
