Starling Bank has announced plans which the fintech firm says could create up to 1,000 new full or part time jobs in Manchester.

Starling Bank is set to open a new office in the North West city during the first half of next year, although a final location for the facility has yet to be revealed.

Some of the new jobs in Manchester will be customer service roles but there will also be more specialist positions such as cyber security, data science, operations and software engineering.

Starling Bank is headquartered in London but also has offices in Southampton, Cardiff and Dublin, employing around 2,000 members of staff. Manchester will be the bank’s first move into the north of England and will see the firm increase their headcount by up to 50 per cent in the coming years.

In a press release the company said that one reason it had chosen Manchester for its fifth office base was that: “The city, which has been named the UK’s Top Digital Tech City, benefits from a £5 billion digital ecosystem and access to stand-out graduates from three top universities.”

Announcing the plans, Starling Bank’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Anne Boden, said: “What better place to set-up shop than in Manchester? As the world’s first industrial city, with three brilliant universities on its doorstep and a thriving technology scene, there was never any doubt that Manchester would house our first step into the North.”

Starling Bank’s Chief People Officer, Susanna Yallop, also commented, saying: “We’ve expanded our headcount by 20 per cent this year and only continue to grow. Our sights are now firmly set on Manchester, where we can draw from its potential workforce of more than seven million, allowing us to grow our headcount even further with some of the North’s finest talent.”
