German discount retailer Lidl has announced plans for a new store which will create 100 new full or part time supermarket jobs in Belfast.

In addition to the 100 permanent roles after completion, the proposed store would create a further 200 temporary construction jobs whilst the supermarket is being built.

The new £6 million Lidl store will be the chain’s ninth supermarket in Belfast but its first launch in the south of the Northern Ireland capital city.

Across the whole of Northern Ireland, Lidl currently has 41 stores but has plans to cross the 50-store threshold in the next few years.

The German chain employs over 1,000 members of staff in full and part time roles across its Northern Ireland operations.

If planning permission is granted for the new 15,000 square foot supermarket, Lidl will build the store near to Belfast’s National Football Stadium on Boucher Road.

The new Belfast Lidl could be ready for action as early as next year if the green light is given for the proposal to go ahead.

Announcing their latest addition to Belfast, Lidl Northern Ireland’s regional property executive, Chris Speers, said: “Since confirming a £32 million investment into the Greater Belfast region with five key sites late last year, we’re pleased to be delivering these projects at pace and with great success.”

“Our fifth site at Boucher Road is a strategically-important location for us, expanding our reach into the south Belfast area for the first time and bringing a multi-million pound investment and new jobs to the local area.”

”We’re pleased to have worked closely with councillors, key businesses and the wider community to bring these plans forward and we are grateful for the positive support we have received for these plans,” added Mr Speers.
