Sky’s New Broadband Service Set To Create Over 1,000 New Jobs

Sky is launching a new broadband service which it says will create over 1,000 new full or part time jobs in the UK.

The new service, dubbed Sky Connect, will try to lure small businesses with super fast broadband of up to 76 Mbps, backed up by what the company says will be top notch customer service.

The company is already a leading name in the residential market with Sky Broadband’s more than six million customers. The firm hopes that it will now see similar success in the B2B market as it seeks to compete with other players such as BT.

The setting up of Sky Connect has already created 200 positions, with around 100 contact centre jobs in Yorkshire’s Leeds alone.

The company says a further 1,000 vacancies could be added over time, with vacancies across the new service’s sales operations and at Sky’s UK head office.

Launching the recruitment drive for hundreds of new staff, the Chief Executive Officer for Sky in the UK and Europe, Stephen van Rooyen, said: “Covid-19 has had a huge impact on small British businesses, with many moving online to survive. We’re launching Sky Connect now, and plan to create up to a thousand new jobs across the UK, because we know British businesses will come out fighting and we want to be there to help.”

“Small businesses are the growth engine of our economy and we believe they deserve better. Better products and technology, clearer contracts and exceptional customer service,” added the CEO.

Paul Scully MP, the Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility, welcomed Sky’s announcement, saying: “The pandemic has been a huge challenge for small businesses but it has also shown the entrepreneurial spirit which Britain is renowned for, with firms adapting and shifting their operations online to access new markets and fresh opportunities.”

“This commitment from Sky to create a simpler, better broadband experience for small businesses will make a real difference to many, and it is great that more than 1,000 jobs will be created as a result too,” said Mr Scully.
