BT’s Openreach To Create 5,300 Engineering Jobs In 2021

Openreach, the functional division of BT which looks after the telecommunications company’s infrastructure, has said it will create over 5,000 new full or part time jobs in the UK in 2021.

Openreach is expanding its operations in a move which will generate around 5,300 engineering vacancies for graduates and other job seekers in the UK.

The company, which now claims to be installing reliable and faster connections to UK homes and businesses at an average of every 15 seconds, will create 2,500 jobs within its own network build and service divisions, as well as around 2,800 in the rest of its UK supply chain.

The expansion is part of Openreach’s delivery of its super-fast ‘Full Fibre’ broadband network and will create hundreds of opportunities for budding engineers in most areas of the nation.

The division of BT is aiming to roll-out the Full Fibre network to 20 million homes and businesses over the next five to ten years and now needs to recruit new talent in the thousands to help it deliver on its targets.

Regional Director at Openreach, Connie Dixon, said: “As a major employer and infrastructure builder, we believe Openreach can play a leading role in helping the UK to build back better and greener. Our Full Fibre network build is going faster than ever and we’re now looking for people to build a career with Openreach and help us upgrade broadband connections and continue improving service levels throughout the region.”

"We’re also investing in our supply chain, which will support the creation of thousands of jobs based all over the UK,” added Ms Dixon.

Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, welcomed the announcement from Openreach, saying: “Throughout this crisis I've been clear that our number one economic priority is to protect jobs, so I'm delighted to welcome this announcement of 5,000 new skilled roles. We’re investing billions of pounds across the UK as part of our Plan for Jobs to ensure nobody is left without hope or opportunity.”

Openreach provides jobs for almost 35,000 people and the new round of recruitment will see the company increase its direct headcount by around 7 per cent to reach close to 37,500 members of staff.
