Cybersecurity Firm To Create Dozens Of New Jobs In Belfast

Cygilant, an American cybersecurity firm, is to create dozens of new jobs in Belfast, with the company keen to hire graduates in the Northern Irish capital.

The Boston-based company says it has already finished recruitment for 25 positions in Belfast but is looking to fill a further 40 vacancies with graduates or candidates who are already experienced in the tech sector.

The company will work with around 200 customers, offering security monitoring services to medium sized firms in the retail, finance, education and health sectors.

If the Cygilant operations detect any security breaches or identify potential threats to their client’s systems then they assist their internal IT departments in resolving the issues.

The 25 staff who already work for Cygilant’s Belfast operation are currently working remotely because of the pandemic, but will eventually join the other 40 recruits at offices in the city centre’s new Centrepoint building.

The company pointed to a constant supply of graduates from Belfast’s top universities as one of the main reasons for them opening their first European base in the city.

Praising the breadth and depth of talent in Belfast, Rob Scott, the Chief Executive Officer of Cygilant, said:

“When we decided to expand into the European market, we quickly realised there was no better place than Belfast. The city is full of great people who have an unbelievable work ethic, truly matching and embodying the customer service-first culture we have here at Cygilant.”

“The city is also quickly becoming an innovation hub for technology companies including a growing cyber-security sector, so all the pieces just fit nicely together. We are thrilled to be here in Belfast, and, in the short time since we've started operations, we are already seeing the impact the team is having on our business.”

“Belfast is also the sister city to Boston and is easily accessible within EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and from our home in Boston,” added Mr Scott.

Welcoming the announcement from Cygilant, Northern Ireland Minister for the Department for the Economy, Diane Dodds, said: “This is an important endorsement of Northern Ireland's growing reputation for excellence in cyber-security. The company has already secured its permanent base in Belfast's city centre and recruited 25 of the roles, with hiring efforts continuing over the next few years.”

“When fully operational, this investment will deliver nearly £2.8m in annual salaries to the Northern Ireland economy,” added Ms Dodds.

The Cygilant deal in Belfast has been facilitated after securing a partnership with regional business development agency Invest Northern Ireland.

The organisation’s Executive Vice President for the Americas, Peta Conn, commented on the partnership and their £455,000 injection into the deal, saying:

“We are delighted to welcome Cygilant into Belfast’s thriving cybersecurity community. Northern Ireland is the number one international investment location for U.S. cybersecurity firms because we understand the unique, rapidly evolving skill sets required by American companies in this critical sector.”

“We actively partner with investors and universities to ensure our talent pool is prepared to hit the ground running. We look forward to helping Cygilant thrive and grow in Northern Ireland,” concluded Mr Conn.

Cygilant joins other global firms which have set up cybersecurity operations in the city, such as fellow-US firm Contrast Security which created 120 jobs in Belfast last year.

Eventually, the Northern Ireland Executive hopes to have 5,000 staff working in the cyber security sector before the end of the decade.
