Ocado To Create 400 Development Jobs In The UK

British online supermarket retailer Ocado has said it will create around 400 new development jobs in the UK.

The recruitment drive at Ocado is being fuelled in part by a new deal struck with Japan and hundreds of developer roles will be created at the company’s bases in London’s Old Street and Hatfield.

Ocado will build up to 20 warehouse facilities for AEON, Japan’s shopping centre developer and operator, with the first to open in Tokyo during 2023.

A potential three further fulfilment centres will be added in other parts of Japan before the end of 2025, and AEON will make use of Ocado’s software to facilitate online shopping and deliveries to around 100 million customers nationwide.

If successful, Ocado could continue to add a dozen more fulfilment centres in Japan up until 2035, helping AEON to expedite its orders from online shoppers.

The news of the deal with AEON comes as Ocado also boosts it homegrown portfolio of distribution facilities, with the company announcing earlier this week that it is starting work on a new warehouse in Bristol which could ship 30,000 orders per week once it is up and running.

Commenting on the 400 new development jobs in London and Hatfield, Duncan Tatton-Brown, the director of finance at Ocado, said: “These jobs are outside of the other roles that we are creating, both head office roles here in the UK, but also some roles in the territories where we operate.”

Ocado’s chief executive, Tim Steiner, also commented on the deal with AEON, saying: “I am delighted to welcome another extraordinary retailer, and the first from Asia, to the unique international club of grocers powering their e-commerce operations with Ocado.”
