Paper Straws To Create Over 100 Jobs In South Wales

The trend away from plastic to paper straws is to create over 100 new jobs in South Wales at Transcend Packaging.

The company has secured a deal to supply paper straws to the McDonald’s fast food chain in a move which will see Transcend Packaging boost its headcount by 1,000 per cent over the next three years.

The sustainable packaging firm which caters for a range of sectors currently employs just 20 members of staff but will need to fill a further 102 vacancies after signing off the paper straws deal with McDonald’s.

The expect to expand further and create around 80 more jobs in the following two years, taking their staffing levels to over 200 before the end of 2021.

In addition to manufacturing paper straws, Transcend Packaging also makes other eco-friendly products such as paper-based folding cartons.

Explaining their company ethos, Transcend Packaging’s managing director, Lorenzo Angelucci, said: “By working in partnership with local and regional government, leading companies and the wider public, we are able to provide innovative packaging solutions that help preserve a healthy environment. We believe that British companies can help drive innovation in sustainability and are proud to be the leading producer of eco-friendly paper straws in the United Kingdom.”

“We founded Transcend Packaging because we aspire to help companies become more sustainable across a broad range of products from paper straws to folding cartons. Our entire Transcend team appreciates the generous support from the Welsh Government and we look forward to providing jobs in Wales for many years to come.”

“I am delighted that McDonald’s has taken this visionary step towards reducing the environmental impact of the food industry. Spurred on by Sir David Attenborough’s “Blue Planet” series we hope that Transcend’s new range of environmentally friendly products will be part of the solution for a greener world,” added Mr Angelucci.

Welcoming the news, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates, said: “The Welsh Government is proud to be supporting Transcend Packaging as it works to create an additional 102 jobs. This supports the priorities outlined in ‘Our Valleys Our Future’, to create thousands of new, fair, secure and sustainable jobs in the Valleys.”

“Not only is the company rapidly becoming a leader in its field, it is also helping one of the biggest global fast food names to slash its use of single use plastic.”

“Transcend Packaging’s focus on decarbonisation and innovation is exactly the sort of behaviour we are trying to encourage with our Economic Action Plan and the Welsh Government is proud to be working hard to support such an ethical and forward looking business,” added Mr Skates.
