Aldi To Create Over 500 More Supermarket Jobs In Scotland

Aldi is to create over 500 more supermarket jobs in Scotland next year as it looks set to open a further eight new stores in the country.

With an average of around 70 full or part time jobs created with each new store opening, there could be approximately 550 extra Scottish vacancies advertised by Aldi in the country this year.

Aldi currently has 64 supermarkets in Scotland, so the planned expansion during 2016 will see their portfolio in the country increase by 12.5 percent over the next twelve months. Their staff headcount in Scotland will increase by an even bigger percentage, rising from just short of 2,000 to more than 2,500. Once all of the new vacancies are filled by the end of next year, Aldi will have tripled its staff levels in Scotland in just four years.

Two of the new Scottish Aldi supermarkets are planned for Edinburgh and one each will be added at Glasgow and Aberdeen. Other new Aldis are earmarked for Annan, Polmont, Newton Mearns and Strathaven.

Explaining the push to further expand in Scotland, managing director of Aldi north of the border, Richard Holloway, said: “Our business model in Scotland has always been about working with the best local producers to bring top quality products to our customers at everyday low prices. In the year ahead, we want to grow relationships with existing suppliers and cultivate new ones too.”

“There is no doubt that Aldi is growing in popularity across the UK, and Scotland is a significant success story in its own right. With new stores opening next year, we're looking forward to giving even more people the chance to switch to Aldi and save on their weekly shop. We’re retaining existing customers and attracting new shoppers, due to the quality and value of the products on offer,” added Mr Holloway.
