B&M Stores are set to create around 500 new full and part time jobs in Cheshire as the North West firm boosts their warehouse facilities in the region.

The discount retailer, based in Speke, Merseyside, is to add distribution operations in Runcorn and Middlewich in a move which will generate hundreds of jobs for Cheshire.

The two new Cheshire warehouses will cover a space of more than 800,000 square feet and will help to deliver products for B&M’s chain of more than 400 UK stores. The Runcorn facility is set to open in July and the Middlewich one in September, with around 250 Cheshire jobs to be created at each distribution centre.

Commenting on the announcement, chief executive of B&M Simon Arora, said: “We believe we are the UK's leading variety retailer. To provide our shoppers with exceptional value, we must have a highly efficient supply chain infrastructure in place. The new distribution warehouses are essential to achieving that objective.”

And Mike Benson, distribution director for B&M Stores, added: “We are delighted to have agreed terms to acquire these premises which had both been vacant for some years. In doing so, we are creating much needed employment for Class 1 HGV drivers, warehouse operatives and supervisors. These high bay, modern facilities are either strategically located on the M6 motorway network or convenient for our primary distribution centre in Liverpool, and a much-needed improvement on our legacy warehousing.”

Leader of Runcorn’s Halton Council, Rob Polhill, welcomed the news, saying: “These jobs are very welcome. Halton has found its niche with the logistics market. Companies are choosing to come here because of our excellent road network and the prospect of a new bridge.”
