BBC To Create 300 Jobs In Birmingham

The BBC is to create 300 jobs in Birmingham over the next year and a half, with many of the positions on offer being entry level opportunities for young people. The announcement adds a further 100 jobs to the 200 vacancies that the broadcasting organisation had previously earmarked for the city, with many of the extra positions to be in the human resources functions of the BBC.

Much of the corporation’s HR support has been outsourced by the BBC previously, but now, by bringing the functions in-house, the organisation can create hundreds of new jobs in the West Midlands city.

The 300 Birmingham jobs will be located at The Mailbox, an iconic building which used to be a Royal Mail sorting office until it was converted into a space for offices, restaurants, retail outlets and leisure facilities in 1998.

BBC Birmingham’s director, Joe Godwin, who also runs the BBC Academy, said that the new jobs would be a mix of entry level positions, talent and skills development opportunities, apprenticeships and traineeships.

“I’m pleased that even more jobs are coming to Birmingham. Instead of bringing an additional 200 jobs here, I can announce today that we’re now proposing to bring around 300. These roles will help build up BBC Birmingham further as the BBC’s home for skills, talent and recruitment as part of a new BBC HR Service Centre here at The Mailbox,” said Mr Godwin.

A spokesperson for the BBC added: “We announced last year that Birmingham would become the BBC’s new hub for HR, the BBC Academy and BBC Workplace. This has involved moving 200 jobs to Birmingham over the last year. We have now also announced plans to create a new HR Service Centre in the city, with an additional circa 100 in-sourced roles in Birmingham from December 2015. We’ll therefore be actively seeking to redeploy BBC staff to the new service centre and expect to be recruiting externally across the city and surrounding area from July.”
