Kirklees College in Yorkshire will use a major funding boost of £5 million to create more than 400 Huddersfield apprenticeships.

The college has received over £3 million in funding from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) as part of the UK government’s Local Growth Deal initiative. Kirklees will add pump further investment into the partnership, generating around 440 new apprenticeships for young people in Huddersfield.

The money will be used to build a specialist training centre to get apprentices working towards engineering and manufacturing careers in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food sectors. It will also allow Kirklees College to take on over 800 new students before 2020.

Speaking at the end of January, Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said that the government’s Growth Deals were all about putting power into local areas and infrastructures to create more jobs and opportunities for young people and local job seekers.

“It is great that Kirklees College are benefitting from £3.1 million to build on the brilliant work they are already doing to boost engineering skills and training for young people in the area,” said Mr Duncan Smith, adding that Yorkshire and Humberside had witnessed a steeper employment increase than ‘the whole of France’.

One current apprentice at Kirklees College, Tom Fox, was enthusiastic about the news, saying: “Engineering is quite big around this area. I work for a small company and because the average age of engineers is quite high, there are plenty of opportunities for apprentices to replace those who retire. The new centre will mean that the range of apprenticeships will increase, which is great. Apprenticeships are more of a viable option than you think. I did A Levels, but then went onto this Apprenticeship and I don’t regret it at all.”
